At a time when India was ruled by the Britishers and girls were not allowed to come out of their houses or even consider getting educated, a group of Gujarati businessmen came together to set up a primary school for Gujarati girls.
This school was originally established in 1921 as Rashtriya Shala by Shri Kishorelal Mashruwala and Shri Gokulbhai Bhatt. Subsequently, the group of social workers expanded to a large number of other service-minded Gujarati businessmen of Vile Parle area, who then came together to form SVKM in 1934.
A number of eminent educationalists have always been associated with SVKM. In 1934, Rashtriya Shala was taken over by SVKM. In the year 1936, it became Smt. Gokalibai Punamchand Pitamber High School. On 2nd November, 1938, the foundation ceremony of the school building was done at the hands of Shri Bhaidas Maganlal.
A number of eminent Gujarati literary figures, such as Shri Jhinabhai Desai, Shri Umashankar Joshi, Shri Amritlal Yagnik, Shri Indra Vasavada, etc., had started their teaching career in this school. The opening ceremony of the school was performed at the hands of Shri Balasaheb Kher, who was the First Chief Minister of Bombay. Finally, on 28th May 1939, the school became operational.
The members of SVKM were marked by patriotic fervour and selfless service, and each one of them was known for their spirit of indigenous enterprise. All of them were committed to education and public service. Today, from the 1930s, the Mandal has come a long way to emerge as one of the eminent education providers in the western suburbs of Mumbai.
Its footprints are in school, International Baccalaureate, arts, science, commerce, engineering, management, law, architecture, pharmacy education, etc.
Today, the Mandal is led by Shri Amrishbhai Patel, who with his understanding of the socioeconomic and political reality of the country is giving a new direction to the institutions and the programs. The Office Bearers of the Mandal is headed by the President, Shri Amrish R. Patel, ably supported by Vice Presidents, Honorary Secretary, Honorary Joint Secretary and Honorary Treasurer.
The Managing Committee comprises of around fifty members. The President manages the affairs of the SVKM. The Office Bearers of the Mandal meet every week to review and take decisions on any strategic or operational issue impacting the strategic direction of the institutions.
The President chairs all the committees. The Mandal has the illustrious tradition of having some of its well known citizens as its Presidents, including philanthropists like Shri Chatrabhujbhai Narsee and Shri Mukeshbhai Patel.
