FOUNDING

Over the years, NMIMS has grown into an outstanding academic establishment in India covering varied areas of academic interests, and attracting an equally diverse faculty and student body. For further information about NMIMS, click the links below.

The year 1981 saw the opening up of the Management Education System in Mumbai with the decision of the University of Mumbai to allow new management Institutes to be set up. The pressing demand for management education, coupled with a keen sense of social commitment on the part of SVKM led to the birth of Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies named after the intrepid entrepreneur the Late Shri. Narsee Monjee. Over the years it has evolved as a citadel of management thought and learning.

NMIMS made a humble beginning in 1981, as a Management Institute of the Mumbai University, offering two year full time Masters Programme in Management Studies, with 4 full time faculty, 3162 books and an intake of 40 students, above Bhaidas Hall, Vile Parle (west).

The new building of the Institute with an area of 36,000 square feet equipped with facilities for 12 classrooms, Library, Seminar & Conference Rooms and Computer Installation was commissioned in January 1985. This gave NMIMS a strong foothold.

In 1982-83, the first Annual Seminar was organized by the students. A market research involving innovative games designed by students under faculty guidance was organized through the Marketing Fair 'NUMAAISH', which had eight companies participating.

In 1985-86, Mumbai University recognized the two year full time MMS, two year part time DMS, three year masters' part time programmes and other one year diploma programmes.

The Management Development Division was set up to design and conduct need based Executive Development Programmes, Unit Based and In-Company Training Programmes

The Computer Division was setup and Documentation Section commenced in the Library.

In 1986-87, Mumbai University accorded permanent recognition to NMIMS and in 1987-88, Mumbai University granted approval to commence the Doctoral Programme.

In 1988-89, NMIMS won the coveted 'Taj Rolling Trophy' organized by the Indian Hotels Company Ltd. and NMIMS Magazine 'MOSAIC' and the Journal 'Management Review' were published.

Also EUPHORIA the Inter-MMS Institute Festival was organized [which in later years extended to Inter B-School Festival]

In 1989-90 NMIMS won the coveted 'Taj Rolling Trophy' organized by the Indian Hotels Company Ltd for the second consecutive year.

A Management Film Festival was organized in which six new films were screened and discussed under the expert supervision of distinguished resource persons.

A Joint Research Study with Scottish Enterprise Foundation of the Stirling University, U.K., titled 'Graduate Attitudes and Aspirations with reference to Business Entrepreneurship in India' was approved and initiated.

Nine visits by foreign dignitaries were organized on campus to have discussions with faculty members and to deliver insights to students. By now NMIMS had 13 full time faculty members, 2 Professors Emeritus and 75 industry professionals as Visiting Faculty.

NMIMS has always been responsive to market changes and has over a period of time designed and developed programmes meeting the market needs.

In 1991-92 NMIMS was first amongst the Management Institutes in Mumbai to earn recognition by the All India Council for Technical Education [AICTE]. The autonomous Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management (PGDBA) was started.

Later in 1993-94, the booming advertising industry in India decided to provide an endowment for setting up Centre for Advertising and Communication Studies, the goals of which were to develop good quality managerial professionals for advertising industry and research in advertising and communications. STACA  Centre in Advertising Studies was established at NMIMS and the full time Post Graduate Diploma in Advertising and Communication Management [PGDACM] was launched under the Centre.

Also the Aga Khan Foundation NMIMS Education Management Resource Centre was established for developing the Management of minority-run schools in India. In the mean time the third floor of the NMIMS building was commissioned and constructed.

The first overseas MDP was organized in Colombo on 'Negotiating Skills and Strategies'.

The 18 week Womens' Enterprise Programme was started with the support from Overseas Development Administration, U.K., and Scottish Enterprise Foundation, Stirling University, Scotland, U.K.

In 1993-94, 'KAIZEN' Japanese Management' was introduced at NMIMS in collaboration with corporates from Godrej Soaps Ltd. In an effort to synergize industry and Management Education, NMIMS developed a Strategic Alliance with the Tata HRD Network.

Also an International Management Film Festival was organized with the participation of 450 executives from the industry.

In 1994-95, The Centre for Capital Market and Investment Management was setup and also NMIMS Newsletter was released.

In 1995-96, Dr. Ram Tarneja Rural Marketing Research Centre was setup and the Post Graduate Diploma in Rural Management [PGDRM] was launched.

A Quality Systems Management Programme which included Training & Consultancy support for small scale industries was introduced in collaboration with Overseas Development Administration, U.K., and Scottish Enterprise Foundation, Stirling University, Scotland, U.K. The Women Entrepreneurship Development programme initially supported by Stirling University was now supported by Small Industries Development Bank of India [SIDBI]. Small Industries Development Bank of India [SIDBI] created a Corpus Fund of Rs 20 lacs at the NMIMS to run special programmes for small and medium scale enterprises, thus initiating the Small Industries Management Programme [SIMAP].

A unique Tele-Distance Education Programme was introduced in association with ZEE Education and 1300 students from India and West Asian countries enrolled for the programme.

NMIMS instituted a Rolling Trophy SMIRNOFF-NMIMS PURE THRILL CHALLENGE' a quiz contest for Corporate and Management Schools. Mafatlal Consultancy Rolling Trophy [NMIMS & Mafatlal] was instituted for a Paper Presentation Contest for Business Schools. Library began providing Online Databases like Librarian Ver. 4.0. CMIE, BONNET, INDIA ON LINE, as a part of its services.

In 1996-97, University of North London and University of Bologne (Italy) were added to NMIMS network with International Universities.

In 1997-98, Privatization and internationalization of the Telecom Sector prompted the NMIMS to commence a Certificate Course in Telecom Management. In the wake of globalisation and liberalization, International Business was introduced as a mandatory specialization, which trained students in the cross-cultural aspects of business.

Discussions commenced with Shri D. J. Sanghvi College of Engineering, Bhagubhai Mafatlal Polytechnic and C. B. Patel Research Centre to establish an Enterprise and Innovation Centre for the benefit of small and medium enterprises. As an extension activity of the Innovation center, the visiting faculty members from Durham, London and Bologne, Italy interacted with students to imbibe in them innovation in management. Personal Growth labs for enhancing interpersonal skills of students was setup. French and German were introduced as special languages to prepare students of international business for global dealings. Student Feedback followed by faculty dialogue was introduced.

In 1999-2000, National Assessment and Accreditation Council awarded NMIMS the Five Star rating.

In 2000-01, Bombay Management Association awarded NMIMS the Best Management Institute of the year award.

In 2001-02, Bombay Management Association awarded NMIMS the Best Management Institute of the year award for the 2nd time in a row. Association of Indian Universities [AIU] certified NMIMS autonomous PGDBA course equivalent to MBA.

NMIMS became the first Management School to launch its own online admission test called NMAT.

The Industry Institute Partnership Cell (IIPC) was established and a Language Lab was set up. Also the task of revamping of infrastructure and renovating of physical facilities at NMIMS was taken up.

In 2002-03, NMIMS was granted the Deemed to be University ( as per UGC Norms) status, by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India on the basis of significant amount of work and recognition as one of the top business schools in India. Also for the 3rd time, Bombay Management Association awarded NMIMS the Best Management Institute of the year award.

Major Developments Post Deemed University Status

In 2003-04, NMIMS de-affiliated itself from the Mumbai University and redefined its identity with a new logo. NMIMS was awarded the ISO 9001:2000 Certification by ICL in 2004 and ranked 10th in the Asia Inc B-School Survey (South Asia Region).

Restructuring of its MBA flagship course was taken up and CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) system of grading was adopted by NMIMS. A Curriculum Review Process with industry and academic professionals was introduced.

Post Gradaute Diplomas in Management for working executives delivered via Satellites through the Department of Alternate Modes of Learning were established at NMIMS. Faculty self assessment & self development was aligned and Students' Research Assistantship was initiated.

Integrated Management System was implemented at NMIMS which led to computerization of all departments and easy availability of cross departmental data.

The Social Enterprise Cell, Research & Publication Cell, Consultancy & Executive Development Programme Cell and Publicity & Corporate Relation Cell were setup at NMIMS.

In 2004-05, NMIMS (Deemed University) was awarded the Golden Peacock National Training Award 2004 in the category of a Large Training Provider by the Institute of Directors (IOD). NMIMS was rated as one of the top ten institutes in the country with excellent brand value, infrastructure, intellectual capital and focus towards growth in the Outlook Cfore survey 2004.

NMIMS (Deemed University) launched the Doctoral Program in Management and a unique MBA [Technology] programme, a blend of engineering & management education.

In 2005-06, Dr. J. J. Irani Award for the Best Management Institute 2005 was presented to NMIMS (Deemed University) at the 7th Annual Convention on Leadership at Nehru Centre on October 5, 2005. National Assessment & Accreditation Council [NAAC] re-accreditation awarded NMIMS (Deemed University) an 'A' grade, with a score between 85-90%.

Bombay Management Association awarded NMIMS the Best Management Institute of the year award 2004-05 for the 4th time. NMIMS was ranked amongst the top ten B-Schools in the country by Business Today-AC Nielsen-ORG-MARG B- School Survey 2005 and Outlook Cfore B-School Survey 2005.

NMIMS launched a unique programme called MBA (Capital Markets) in collaboration with the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and Joint National Doctoral Programme in Management in collaboration with TAPMI, Manipal and XIME, Bangalore.

Considering the focus on higher and multi disciplinary studies, SVKM's Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (Deemed University) was re-christened to SVKM's Narsee Monjee Institute of Management & Higher Studies.

A review audit was performed at NMIMS, in terms of adherence to the policies and procedures and the ISO Certification body has renewed NMIMS certification.

NMIMS announced various scholarships from the academic year 2005-06, like Financial Assistance Scheme for the Full time students, Scholarship programme for the Full time students and Student Awards.

NMIMS Alumni of the first batch of MMS (1981-83) announced a rolling trophy to be instituted in memory of their batch mate Mr. Shailesh Kharkar. This Gold Medal and Certificate of Honour is presented to the best management student of the year for Overall Excellence & Leadership.

The year 2006-07, having experienced the benefits of the Deemed University, NMIMS took a conscious decision to move towards the concept of Schools. The concept of Schools revolves around the fact that each school has its unique identity and operation like an academic business unit responsible for its growth. NMIMS introduced four schools namely:

  • School of Business Management
  • Mukesh Patel School of Technology Management & Engineering
  • School of Pharmacy & Technology Management
  • School of Distance Learning

In accordance with the UGC Guidelines, in December 2006, Narsee Monjee Institute of Management and Higher Studies [Deemed University] was rechristened as SVKM's NMIMS (Established under section 3 of UGC Act 1956, vide notification no.F.9-37/2001-U3 dated 13th January 2003, of the Government of India)

What started as baby steps towards establishing a management school turned into giant strides towards providing an all encompassed, globalized University.

NMIMS won the BMA Best Management Institute of the Year Award 2006- 2007 for the 5th time and also won the GurukulJyoti Award for Excellence in Education 2006.

A Syndicate Academia  'Think Tank' was formed at NMIMS and the members of the Syndicate Academia were from the corporate world and the academics.

Continuous efforts resulted in introduction of new programmes to meet the needs of the Industry, Government, Voluntary Service Organizations and the society at large. These programmes were focused MBA Programmes like:

  • MBA (Capital Markets)
  • MBA (Retail Management)
  • MBA (Actuarial Science)
  • MBA (Pharmaceuticals Management)
  • MBA (Services Management)
  • MBA (Global Business)
  • 5 year integrated programmes like MBA (Tech.) & MBA (Pharm.Tech.)
  • Ph.D.
  • Graduate Programmes like B. Tech. and B. Pharm.

Ms. Henrietta H. Fore, Under Secretary for Management Education, United States, and Department of State, USA visited NMIMS in March 2007 and delivered a lecture on 'Managing in a Global Environment'.

SVKM's NMIMS signed a MOU with Athens University of Business and Economics (AUEB) for a Summer Entrepreneurship Program in September 2006. The objective of this unique visiting program and collaborative initiative between higher education institutions in Greece and India was to offer Indian students of Entrepreneurship and Family Business Management an insight into the Greek, Balkan and South-East European business environment.
