Formerly known as Bombay, the city's name was changed in 1994 to Mumbai.
The city that never sleeps - is how Mumbai is described. It is because Mumbai pulsates with activity - from being India's finance centre, the economic powerhouse of the nation, heart of the Hindi film industry and the industrial hub of everything from textiles to petrochemicals.
Located to the west of India, Mumbai is built on a group of seven islands on the west coast of the state of Maharashtra. Mumbai was captured by Portuguese in the 17th century but later it exchanged hands and went to the British empire as a part of dowry when the Portuguese princess married Charles II of England. Three centuries of development have transformed the seven scrubby islands into a mighty metropolis of towering apartment blocks, colonial mansions, seafront promenades and air-conditioned shopping malls.
True to its nature of being a great city, Mumbai has welcomed everyone with open arms. People from all over the country have come and settled here. This gives the society of Mumbai a multi-lingual and multi-cultural colour.
Apart from being the business hub of India, it is also the most enthralling tourist destination with places like the Gateway of India and the Elephanta Caves that continue to draw visitors.
