STUDENTS - COMMUNITY SERVICE

NMIMS Deemed To Be University has a strong commitment to influence the quality of management in profit and non- profit organizations. The University believes that social responsibility is a key contributor to progress and that the principles and techniques of management are applicable to both; the corporate sector and voluntary service organizations.

With the establishment of its Rotary Club of Bombay West Chair in Management of Non-Profit Organizations in 1991, NMIMS became one of the earliest institutions in this country to develop training in the area of voluntary sector. The University has conducted short-term training programs in the areas of Micro Finance, Micro Insurance, Marketing Rural Products, which were supported, by SIDBI and NABARD in the recent past. The University also offers 12 weeks program in Enterprise Training for Women since 1992.

With the collaboration of the Rotary Club of Bombay West, NMIMS has conducted short-term courses and Certificate programs in VSO Management. Since 2004 the institute has upgraded the Certificate program in Management of Voluntary Organisations to Diploma program in Management of Voluntary Organisations. In 2004, the institute organized VOICE 2004 (Voluntary Organizations International Conference on Empowerment). In 2006 the institute collaborated with Unltd Ventures, Tata Institute of Social Sciences and Skoll Center for Social Entrepreneurship, Oxford University, to organize an International Conference on Social Entrepreneurship.

Over the years we have observed that the environment in the social sector has changed to a large extent. Community needs are growing in size and diversity. Organizations are facing financial crunch because traditional forms of funding are becoming smaller and less reliable. More nonprofits are competing for government and philanthropic funds. Funders and donors are demanding more accountability.

Societies are searching for innovative and efficient ways to provide socially important goods in health, education, social services, environment and community development. With the emergence and growth of cross sector partnerships, there is a growing realization that there is a way to combine the very best of the not-for-profit, philanthropic world with the very best of the for- profit, enterprising world. This hybrid is the wave of the future for both profit and nonprofit organizations. In the face of this new reality, an increasing number of forward-looking nonprofits/ NGOs are beginning to appreciate the increased revenue, focus and effectiveness that can come from adopting "for profit? business approaches. Increasingly, they are reinventing themselves as social entrepreneurs, combining "the passion of a social mission with an image of business-like discipline, innovation, and determination.

NMIMS is committed to nurturing the social entrepreneurs of tomorrow and strengthen the social entrepreneurs of today. In this context, NMIMS has designed a uniquely architectured One Year Diploma program in Social Entrepreneurship and a Three Year Part Time MBA program in Social Entrepreneurship.

In order to institutionalize its social commitment further, SVKM?s NMIMS has established Social Enterprise Cell with the following objectives

  • To organize orientation and advanced courses for students of management in the area of management of social enterprises, micro finance, and social sector development.
