Introduction

NMIMS's Balwant Sheth School of Architecture (BSSA) focuses on various modes of architectural education, research and practice. It emphasizes on the ever changing ethos, behavioral sciences, tools and techniques, and assimilates all in contemporary design expression.

Since its inception in 2007, BSSA has evolved into a platform for experimentation for multi scalar design ranging from furniture to architecture to urban studies.

After 10 years of continuous and rigorous experimentation, the school stands at a threshold to expand. The Center for Interior Environment and Design (CIED) is a natural direction to continue the design philosophy at BSSA to the scale of Interior Environments.

Vision Statement

The practice of Interior Design is an extremely relevant profession in today's urbanised environments. Interior Spaces within dense urban built environments need to be resource sensitive and environmentally balanced to accommodate varieties of human activities that would take place within.

The design of Interior Spaces play an important role in creating multidisciplinary platforms where people experience new cultural and social scenarios. It is about behaviors, habits, interests and lifestyle of people in the society. Material and immaterial aspects will be continuously analyzed throughout the course including innovative emerging technologies and new perspectives of communication.

The Degree

A Bachelors in Arts (Honours), Interior Environment and Design would be awarded to students who successfully complete the Full-Time 3 Year / 6 Semester program. The courses are based on a credit structure with 23-26 credit per semester totaling to around 150 credits over for the entire B.A. (Honours) Program

Teaching, Learning and Evaluation

A variety of core, value added and multidisciplinary courses are offered through the course of the program to expose the students to areas from art, history, humanities, sociology, film, journalism apart from the core design, technology and professional studies to create a holistic learning environment and to situate the practice of Interior Design within a larger context.

Continuous Internal Evaluations (CIE) would be conducted by the Internal Faculty through the course of the semester. At the end of the Semester, a Term End Evaluation (TEE) would be conducted jointly by a panel of Internal Subject Faculty and External Examiners in case of design based subjects or Viva conducted by the External Examiners in case of other subjects.

Salient Features of the Program

• Workshops: Workshops conducted during the Program would enable the student understand the relation between the Natural and Artificial realms and the Human.
• Design Studios: Studios explore design principles through design problems involving the unique fundamental framework for Interior Environmental Design.
• Product and Furniture Design
• Indian and International Study Visits: Study Visits through the course would expose students to various Indian and International sites of historic, heritage and contemporary significance.
• Advance Computation: Digital Design and Advance Computation courses will engage desktop making tools to foster familiarity with digital fabrication in the design of the Interior environments.
• Spatial Dynamics: Colour and Light and Acoustics
• Seminars: These would offer complementary theories to position Interior Environment and Design in a holistic perspective. The Seminars offered in the Program include Humanities, Visual Studies, Elements of Design, Art Appreciation, History of Art and Visual Culture, Theory of Design, Design Research, Traditional and Crafts, Environmental Studies and Professional Practice.
• Electives: The skills acquired through the elective modules would strengthen their cognitive and abstraction abilities. They would refine their technical abilities and enrich their theoretical base. Elective Courses offered would include Wood Workshop, Pottery, Painting, Object Art, Photography, Printmaking, Photography, Project Management, Cinema: Process and Product and Journalism.

Intake

The Program would have an intake of 20 students per Academic Year.

Eligibility

• The candidate must have passed 10+2 or equivalent examination including International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB certificate / & D.P. awarded candidates are not eligible) in any stream from a recognized Board in the first attempt and should have obtained a minimum of 50% aggregate marks.
• Candidates of CBSE, ICSE, should mention in the online registration / e-admission form (if selected) for 10+2 or equivalent examination, the aggregate marks of all the subjects the candidate has taken/opted and appeared for (not best of four, five, six or seven). The candidate shall have passed all the subjects he / she has taken / opted and appeared in the applicable examination/s in a single / first attempt. The aggregate percentage of all subjects the candidate has taken / opted and appeared will be taken into consideration for confirming eligibility of the candidate for the program at the time of admission.
• In case the mark sheet issued by the applicable Board / Institution is in percentile/s, the actual aggregate percentage of all the subjects taken / opted and appeared by the candidate will be taken into consideration.
• Candidates above 25 years of age are not eligible to apply.
• Those candidates who have passed or are appearing (all subject/s taken / opted) for 10+2 examination from a Board / University where Grade Point Average is given, such candidates must produce in writing from the Board / University concerned, the equivalent percentage for the GPA/CGPA obtained.
• Note for IB & Cambridge Candidate: Candidates who do not have final mark sheet will be given "Provisional Admission" based on predicted scores. Fees will be accepted from such candidate but their admission will be confirmed on submission of final mark sheet before the commencement of the program if found eligible. The candidate shall have to submit copy of AIU notification to confirm their eligibility for the program as equivalent to (10+2) examination/s. Marksheet/Transcripts issued by Board/University only be considered (School/Institute will not be accepted.)
• International School/s candidates and those candidates who have completed their (10+2) or equivalent examination/s from overseas school/s / Institute/s / University will have to submit AIU certificate of equivalence (mandatory) to confirm their eligibility for the program as equivalent to (10+2) examination/s.
• Candidates passing 10+2 or equivalent examination from Open or Distance learning (ODL) School recognized only by National Institute of Open schooling (NIOS) can apply for the program subject to fulfillment of the eligibility criteria for the program. Candidates who have passed the 10+2 or equivalent examination by doing a part-time course or through distance learning / correspondence / externally / open school other than NIOS are not eligible to apply for the courses.
• Only single mark sheet with all compulsory subjects taken / opted and passed in one / first attempt is mandatory, no compartmentalized mark sheet shall be considered.
• The candidate who has NOT cleared the 10+2 or equivalent examination in the first attempt is NOT eligible to apply for the course.
• Candidate whose final mark sheet is not available at the time of admission are required to submit internet copy of result duly attested by Principal of the school / college, failing which candidate will not be admitted to the course.
• Candidate will not be eligible if any subject is marked as ungraded/fail in the mark sheet /grade sheet. For absent/ungraded in any of the additional/non mandatory subject will be consider as eligible provided such candidate is declared as pass by respective board.

Selection Process

• The Merit list will be prepared on the basis of the application data in terms of academic marks at the 10+2 examination. and Personal Interview conducted by NMIMS
• The selection will be solely based on merit. In this regard, the decision of the NMIMS will be final and undisputable as also shall be binding on all concerned.

College plays a very important role in shaping the future of its students. Here at BSSA, students are provided with a very work friendly environment that nurtures not only them as interior and environment designers but also brings out the capabilities to the fullest. As students, we are allowed to try and experiment different ideas with a lot of acceptance. Teaching methods are focused on deep rooted explanations of the concept with the help of videos and the sundry books in the library than just overall external outlook. From the senior most authority of the teachers to the staff members, one receives warmth and oneness and the feeling of being a close knit family. I could perform way beyond my expectations in the past few months with the extremely technological and challenging environment that BSSA has to offer.
I'm quite proud that I chose BSSA and wouldn't once hesitate to recommend it to someone in the future.

I am Disha Shah, student of Center of Environment Interior and Design, a course offered by the NMIMS University.
I would like to share my experience so far in this college. The course offered for three years is extremely professional and gainful in all respects. It helps to prepare the student in an holistic manner so that they can even start to work right after or even during their degree course. The college in all is very friendly and supportive including the faculty members and staff. The whole working environment is full of motivation.
We have Visiting faculty members who help us to experience and learn the study patterns going on in different colleges. Overall the course is really challenging and interesting at the same time. I am having a really good time in doing this course.

BSSA as an institution nurtures its students, not just as future architects but designers with very radical yet sensitive unique approaches to various concerns. We spend most of our day here, so it wouldn't be wrong to call it our second home. It actually feels like a second home to us due to the friendly faculty and helpful staff. The encouraging attitude of the faculty wouldn't let you stop your thinking, rather boost it every way possible for a stream load of ideas which would be necessary for our lives ahead. No matter what subject we study there is always a freedom to explore more. This helped me to find my own style all together. The environment at BSSA taught me to be myself, learn from others and help each other grow.
